Psychedelic movies that will blow your mind!
We recently talked in an article about psychedelic art, what it consisted of, and its influences and it is for this reason that today, we want to continue commenting on artistic expressions related to this type of art. To do this, we will discuss some of the best psychedelic movies of all time.
TOP 10 OF THE BEST PSYCHEDELIC FILMS OF ALL TIME
Next, we will make a top 10 of the best psychedelic films so that you can enjoy a cinema that will blow your mind.
The first one we want to mention is Metropolis, a 1927 series that was directed by Fritz Lang and is considered to belong to the science fiction genre. Metropolis came to be considered one of the most important films of German Expressionism despite the fact that at the time after its premiere, it was a box office failure.
Through this film, an apocalyptic vision of the society of the future is reflected and is based on the 1926 novel written by Thea Von Harbou, which together with her husband, Fritz Lang, wrote the script.
2001: A Space Odyssey
As we mentioned in our previous article on the Top 10 sci-fi movies of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey is for many the best science fiction film of all time and this top 10 is not it would be complete if this movie wasn’t there. Based on the story by Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrik made a much deeper and more mysterious adaptation in which he narrated various periods in human history
Un Chien Andalou
The next movie that we want to include in this small list is Un Chien Andalou. We wanted to select this film as it is considered one of the greatest exponents of surrealist cinema and therefore, it is a unique and cult work.
It is a film from 1929 and was directed by the Mexican filmmaker Luis Buñuel and the idea arose thanks to a conversation between the film director and the artist Salvador Dalí. In this conversation, they both shared their strangest dreams and thus, some of the most iconic scenes in cinema emerged.
Another of the psychedelic films that we want to highlight is Psych-Out since through this, the different types of psychedelic youths that existed in the 60s are shown and how they liberated their spirit thanks to the consumption of LSD. In this way, the director, Richard Rush, decided to tell the story about a young deaf woman and how she began to get involved in hippie culture.
The Holy Mountain
The Holy Mountain from 1973 is a surrealist film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky who participated in the creation of the script, was also an actor and composer of the film. This film has not only been a great influence for many other artists such as Marilyn Manson, or Darren Aronofsky, but it is also considered to be one of the best productions of the time and undoubtedly the best creation of Jodorowsky.
The next featured film is Decoder, a journey for the minds of viewers thanks to the images and sounds that the director, Maeck, includes in the scenes to infer in people’s minds and take them to other places. All this is achieved despite the fact that the story of this movie is to find a decoder that helps the population move forward.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, of 1998, is probably one of the best-known movies that we could include as psychedelic art. This film tells the story of a lawyer and a journalist who make a trip to Las Vegas by car with marijuana, pills, LSD leaves, cocaine, and numerous other drugs and alcohol.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is based on Hunter S. Thompson’s book, was directed by Terry Gilliam, and is believed to have been created and directed under the influence of LSD, and many actors are also believed to have worked under the influence of drugs. We recommend this film since through it the experiences of the protagonists’ subconscious are narrated and how they seek the American dream.
The Devils is another of the films that we want to comment on since it became a controversial film. It was directed and written by Ken Russel and the story is based primarily on the book The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley. Specifically, it tells the story of a clergyman in 17th century France accused of heresy. The story is based on the real events that happened in the city of Loudun as the biggest event about diabolical possessions.
The next movie we want to mention is Fantastic Planet or better known in French as “La Planète sauvage”. Specifically, this French film belongs to the science fiction genre and is an animation from the 70s directed by René Laloux.
Today, it is still considered one of the great classics of animated films in Europe and is based on the novel “Oms en Série” by the French writer Stefan Wul. Through this film, the story of what the future of human beings will be like and how they have been brought to the planet of the Draags, some extraterrestrials, is told.
Enter The Void
The last movie we want to include in this top 10 best psychedelic movies is Enter The Void. Since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was released, it was not expected that any movie could surpass it until Enter the Void arrived in 2009. Gaspar Noé was the director and writer of this magnificent film which aims for viewers to experience from the armchair what it is like to travel through a psychedelic drug.
Specifically, with Enter The Void a realistic and more complicated view of the psychedelic effects of drugs is shown. To do this, the story of Oscar and Linda is told, two brothers who survive as best they can. He is a drug dealer and she works as a stripper in a club.
