TROPICAL ISLAND BERLIN: THE CARIBBEAN IN GERMANY
In December 2018, Parques Reunidos acquired Tropical Islands for a substantial amount of 226 million euros, around 248,112,970 US dollars. This recent addition stands as the company’s largest-ever investment. A DESTINATION WITH RICH HISTORICAL ROOTS
Tropical Islands came into existence within the confines of a former airship hangar famously named Aerium. The structure initially served as an airfield for the Brand-Guben Pilot Training School of the Luftwaffe. In subsequent years, it transformed into the largest airport within the GDR, playing host to official visits from the former USSR. Notably, the airfield extended its hospitality to astronaut Yuri Gagarin in 1963.
In 1998, the Federal State of Brandenburg relinquished ownership of the facility to CargoLifter AG, a company with intentions of establishing a technological innovation hub in that vicinity. However, CargoLifter faced financial turmoil and declared bankruptcy in 2002. Subsequently, the property was acquired by PLC/Colin Au a year later. Following these financial challenges, the new proprietors opted to transform the historic locale into a water park, leading to the creation of Tropical Islands.
The former airship hangar, known as the dome as well, presently houses a portion of Tropical Islands and stands as one of the largest freestanding structures across the globe, spanning an impressive 6.6 hectares. Alongside the dome, the park also boasts expansive outdoor facilities!

The Tropical Sea and The Lagoon
These two attractions cater wonderfully to visitors who seek relaxation on a sandy shoreline or wish to indulge in a swim amidst cascading waterfalls and lush tropical woods. “The Tropical Sea” features a sprawling 200-meter-long pool encircled by a sandy coast and an assortment of palm trees. Similarly, “The Lagoon” emulates a serene and exotic setting encompassing petite caves, cascades, Balinese huts, and tropical flora!
The World Largest Man-Made Indoor Rainforest
Spanning across an expansive 10,000 square meters, “The Rainforest” area proudly boasts the title of the most extensive artificial indoor rainforest globally. Within its lush confines, around 50,000 plants belonging to 600 diverse species from across the globe find their home.Ā
Beyond the plant life, visitors are also treated to glimpses of select animals like tortoises, flamingos, and peacocks. A one-kilometer-long trail beckons to lead you through this rainforest, revealing its hidden treasures. At the heart of “The Rainforest” stands “Kupu Kupu” the residence of butterflies. Housing exotic butterfly species, Tropical Islands offers an optimal microclimate that nurtures their flourishing presence.

Beginning in 2016, Amazonia has been the outdoor area at Tropical Islands. Encompassing a sprawling natural expanse of 35,000 square meters, it provides ample room for various sports activities such as beach volleyball, soccer, water polo, and more. It also houses several swimming pools for bathing, and opportunities to bask under the sun, and offers an idyllic setting for spending a great time with your friends.
