Angel Falls, Venezuela 

The highest waterfall in the world is in Venezuela, specifically in the Canaima National Park and is known as Santo Ángel since Jimmie Angel, a well-known aviator, confirmed the existence of this waterfall after flying over it in 1937. It has a height of 979 meters and is considered a World Heritage Site. 

Salto del Tugela, South Africa 

The second highest waterfall in the world has a fall of 947 meters and is located in South Africa. In the Natal Real National Park you can find the Salto de Tugela, a waterfall that rises from the Tugela River in the Dragon Mountains (Drakensberg).

Las Tres Hermana Falls, Peru

In the top 3 we find the Tres Hermanas Falls with a height of 914 meters. It is located in the Otishi National Park in Peru and consists of three staggered jumps. One of the great characteristics is that the last one of these falls ends in an underground hole which has not yet been explored. 

Olo’upena, United States

The Olo’upena Waterfall is located in Molokai, Hawaii. It has a height of 900 meters and is characterized by being isolated and can only be seen from the air or the sea. 

Yumbilla Waterfall, Peru 

The fifth waterfall that we are going to discuss is located within the Amazon of Peru and is called Yumbilla Waterfall. It measures 895 meters and above this waterfall is the San Francisco de Yumbilla cave.  

Vinnufossen, Norway

Vinnufossen or also known as Vinufallet, is an 865 meter waterfall that has become the highest in Europe. It is located on the Vinny Glacier which is in the highest part of the city of Sunndalsøra. 

Baläifossen, Norway

This cascade is also located in Norway, particularly in Oslofjorden, Ulvik and has a drop of 850m. Its water flow varies greatly depending on the time of the year. 

Pu’uka’oku Falls, United States

At 840 meters high is the Pu’uka’oku waterfall located on the north coast of Moloka’i. As the area is isolated along this rugged coastline, the easiest access is to catch a helicopter on a 45-minute flight from Maui.

James Bruce Falls, Canada 

This waterfall stands out for its 840 meters high and has become the highest waterfall in North America. This waterfall can only be entered or seen by boat or by plane. 

Browne Waterfall, New Zealand 

The last waterfall we want to discuss is located in New Zealand and is called Browne Waterfall. It has a height of 836 meters and its name refers to the man who discovered it while flying in the 1940s, Victor Crlyle Browne.

Other famous waterfalls (and why are they famous for)

Kjerrskredfossen, Sogn Og Fjordane, Norway

The first of these is Kjerrskredfossen located in Norway. This one stands out because you can see 644 meters of the waterfall from Highway 70 in Sunndalen but there is still 213 meters of additional drop that cannot be seen from the valley.  

Los Chorros de Cura, Aragua, Venezuela

The next waterfall we want to comment on is Los Chorros de Cura located in Venezuela. This waterfall is an authentic wonder of nature because we can find different levels and it is made up of two waterfalls: the jet of Cura and Guariquito. 

Mongefossen, Møre Og Romsdal, Norway

With its 733 meters of fall, this waterfall has become one of the most impressives in Europe as it is located on the cliffs of the famous Romsdalen in Norway.

Which are the tallest waterfalls in the United States?

Here we will highlight three of the tallest waterfalls in the United States. 

Waihilau Falls, Hawaii, United States

The tallest waterfall of the USA is Waihilau, which is located in the Waihilau Valley and has a 792 meter drop. It consists of several tall and thin streams of water that cover a tremendous cliff coated in lush green vegetation.

Colonial Creek Falls, Washington 

Colonial Creek Falls is also considered one of the highest waterfalls in the United States as it has a 783 meters surpassing the famous falls from Yosemite. It stands out above all because it has thirteen different falls. 

Johannesburg Falls, United States

Finally, we want to highlight the Johannesburg Falls because although it does not have a large volume of water, it has a height of 751 meters. 

More waterfalls in South America

Next, we will highlight two waterfalls located in South America. 

Iguazú Falls, Brazil and Argentina

It is probably one of the best known waterfalls in South America and also one of the most visited, as it is located between Argentina and Brazil.

Salto Grande Waterfall, Chile

We also want to comment on the Salto Grande waterfall located in Chile. It is placed in the Torres del Paine National Park and, although it is not one of the highest, it stands out above all the others because of the great amount of water that it pushes creating an impressive landscape. 

Denmark Strait: the highest underwater waterfall in the world

Although we have discussed a large number of waterfalls, we have to say that the highest waterfall in the world is located under water. Specifically located on the western side of the Strait of Denmark in the Atlantic Ocean it has a drop of 3,505 meters, which surpasses all the other waterfalls mentioned above.
