CONTAMINACIÓN ELECTROMAGNÉTICA: QUÉ ES Y CÓMO EVITARLO

Qué es la contaminación electromagnética

If you’re currently reading this post, it’s highly likely that you have already subjected yourself to electromagnetic pollution! From the moment radio waves were initially transmitted, a whole new breed of devices reliant on the electromagnetic spectrum has emerged. In reality, convenience is the sought-after and anticipated commodity of this era. Consequently, we are constantly surrounded by devices that emit electromagnetic waves, such as our smartphones, WiFi routers, Bluetooth gadgets, and so forth.

What is electromagnetic pollution?

Electromagnetic pollution pertains to the adverse consequences that continuous exposure to these types of radiation can potentially inflict on our bodies. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has stated that electromagnetic fields associated with mobile phones are potentially cancer-causing to humans. The World Health Organization (WHO) also acknowledged this fact in 2011.

Moreover, the persistent presence of electromagnetic waves also leads to undesirable outcomes. Headaches, insomnia, and heightened levels of anxiety are among the prevalent symptoms and evidence of electromagnetic pollution.

What Are Electromagnetic Waves?

Let’s delve into a better understanding of this concept using the following example. Have you ever witnessed the mesmerizing and vibrant displays of the northern and southern lights? These breathtaking lights can be observed at the Earth’s polar regions and are renowned for their dazzling colors.

Scientists explain that when charged particles from the sun encounter the Earth’s magnetic field, they give rise to these lights. The Northern Lights serve as a captivating and magnificent example of electromagnetic waves.

Technically speaking, when an electric field oscillates perpendicular to both a magnetic field and the direction of propagation, it generates an electromagnetic wave. Such a wave consists of both electric and magnetic components.

This phenomenon aptly explains the occurrence of the northern lights. When the wavelength of the wave produced by the interaction between charged particles from the sun and the Earth’s magnetic field falls within the visible spectrum, it manifests as vivid colors in the form of an aurora.

Additionally, there are numerous other examples of electromagnetic waves in our universe. Gamma rays originating from distant galaxies, x-rays found both naturally and artificially, microwaves used in kitchen appliances, infrared radiation emitted by space heaters, and radio waves utilized in communication devices are all prime illustrations of electromagnetic waves. Despite being imperceptible to our naked eyes, these waves undeniably exist and play significant roles in various phenomena and technologies.

Electromagnetic Pollution

Imagine a life devoid of electronic devices, where writing letters replaces emails, walking replaces booking an Uber, and physically browsing supermarket aisles replaces ordering groceries online. The absence of electronics would mean sacrificing numerous conveniences. Furthermore, the very concept of the Internet would lose its meaning in such a scenario.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that as the global population continues to rise, so does the number of electronic devices. Regardless of location, people are constantly surrounded by varying degrees of electromagnetic radiation.

Additionally, the advancement of cellular connectivity has led to an increase in the number of cellular towers, which emit potentially harmful levels of electromagnetic (EM) radiation. Some sources suggest that residing within 50 meters of a mobile tower is equivalent to being exposed to an entire day’s worth of oven heat. It is worth noting that cellular towers are often installed in residential areas, and the presence of extremely low-frequency waves can generate perceptible currents in the human body, causing a tingling sensation on the skin.

Moreover, in 2019, the Chicago Tribune conducted tests on smartphone radiation levels and discovered that they exceeded safety limits. There are also claims that electromagnetic waves are responsible for the decline in the sparrow population, as these waves have adverse effects on sparrow eggs. They have been found to thin the lining of the embryos’ skulls, leading to their eventual demise.

Quality of life and Electromagnetic Pollution

Regrettably, there are indeed indirect consequences associated with electromagnetic pollution that can diminish our overall quality of life. Since the advent of this technology, people have been irresistibly drawn to it. Nowadays, virtual communication through video chats has become more popular than in-person visits, and our smartphones, loaded with a multitude of applications, seem to be constantly in our hands.

Our reliance on the Internet has become so profound that it has become an inseparable part of our lives. Searching for a parking spot has become time-consuming, prompting us to opt for online shopping for clothes.

Microwave meals have become the go-to choice due to time constraints and our busy lifestyles. Consequently, with numerous devices operating on electromagnetic waves in our immediate surroundings, our physical well-being has been compromised.

The convenience provided by these devices has taken a toll on our commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Our attention to the world around us, real-life interactions, healthy eating habits, and productivity have all been compromised due to our technological dependencies.

While WiFi and electronic devices greatly benefit our personal and professional lives, it is crucial to prioritize our health over convenience. Turning off our mobile phones and taking a walk in a garden, despite sounding unconventional or outdated, provides respite from electromagnetic radiation. It allows us to disconnect and embrace an environment free from such exposure!
