Dermal Piercing: procedure and the most trendy ones

Piercings are already part of our society and we love them, it is for this reason that in today’s article we discuss a type of piercing. Specifically, we want to talk about dermal piercings and how they are becoming more and more popular.

What is a dermal piercing?

Recently we made a post about the most extreme body modifications you can make, and dermal piercing can be considered as body modifications. Also known as single-point piercing, dermal surface piercings consist of a piercing that is performed with a dermal anchor installed under the skin. That is, unlike the common cartilage piercings that we already know, dermal piercings do not have an entry and exit point, but only one entry piercing. So that the piercing is embedded in the skin, the jewel is placed on the surface of the skin and is secured thanks to a kind of anchor that is embedded on the dermal layer, that is, under the skin. This type of piercing has become very popular in recent years since it can be placed on practically any flat surface of the body and therefore makes it easier to decorate and pierce areas that are more difficult to do with the most regular technique.

How are these types of piercings done?

As we have mentioned, this type of piercing is different from what we commonly know since there is no exit point, it is for this reason that the procedure of dermal piercing is also done in a different way.

Let’s see how do dermal piercings work. It is necessary and very important to comment that to perform a common piercing, a dermal piercing, or any type of modification it is necessary to go to a specialized center that complies with all the necessary measures.

As with a normal piercing, the area where the piercing is to be placed must be cleaned. Also, a point is usually made as a guide to ensure greater accuracy.

To do this, what is known as a dermal punch or circular scalpel is used because it is necessary to extract a small piece of skin. Through this small extraction, what is done is to create a small hole in the skin where the jewel and therefore the piercing will be placed.

After having made this small hole, another tool will be used to create a kind of bag where the anchor will be inserted later. Using forceps, the anchor base plate is inserted into the pocket or hole that was created earlier. At this time, the anchor must be pushed inwards, making sure that it is completely below the skin and parallel to the surface.

To finish this whole process, the jewel is included and screwed to the anchor to ensure that it remains fixed. Some professionals decide to place the jewel before performing the entire procedure so that it is already installed from the beginning.

Importantly, if we had to include this type of piercing in the most painful piercing ranking, it would be in the first place, since it is a really painful process. Through this dermal piercing what is done is to pierce a skin tissue so the pain is considerably much greater than a normal piercing.

How does it have to be cured?

As it is a more painful type of body piercing and it is necessary to perform a skin removal, the healing time is also longer. Specifically, it takes between 1 to 3 months to cure it or even longer depending on the area in which it is performed. Like the healing of other types of piercings, it should be washed very carefully and prevent it from moving or even being torn off by accident. For the first cleaning, it is very important never to touch the jewel or the surrounding area without having previously washed your hands, since failure to do so may lead to infection. After having applied warm soapy water and to clean it properly, you should apply physiological saline, saline solution, or a mixture of water with salt. To do it correctly, it is recommended to press very lightly on the jewel so that it is correctly impregnated with the serum or the mixture. In the event that you want to change or remove the piercing, it is important that you know that you can only change the upper part of the jewel, that is, the visible part. If you want to change the anchor or completely eliminate the piercing, you should always go to a professional since they are specialized.

Finally, it is important to highlight that there are different types of dermal piercing that you can place:

Dermal Anchors

Within the dermal anchors, we can find two different types, the flat foot or the rounded base. The former is considered to be safer as the bottom of the jewel will be angled so it will be less likely to come off the skin.

Dermal caps

Dermal caps are one of the most common types of jewelry since they are screwed onto the top of the anchor, as we have mentioned in the section on how these types of piercings are made.

Leather diver

The last type of jewelry is also one of the least common, and that is because a leather diver has a base with a point and the jewel is located at the top. To add it, the professional must make a stroke to be able to settle the base of the jewel. It is one of the least common since when the healing process is finished the jewel cannot be changed.
