Powerbocking, also referred to as “power-rizing,” “blade running,” and “jump stilting,” is a sport where athletes utilize specialized leg attachments called jumping stilts. These jumping stilts are curved in form and equipped with springs, enabling users to achieve remarkable heights when jumping.
They are known to enhance an athlete’s performance across various activities, with claims suggesting they can boost running speeds by up to 30 miles per hour. Through the use of jumping stilts, powerbockers can engage in a range of movements including tricks, flips, high jumps, and other maneuvers. Invented in 2004 by Alexander Böck, a German inventor, the first jumping stilts were patented under the brand “powerskip”.
The name “powerbocking” is derived from Böck’s surname. Over time, jump stilting has become a highly popular recreational activity, especially in urban areas like cities, where there are opportunities to perform impressive feats akin to parkour.
To practice powerbocking safely and correctly, athletes must consider various factors, such as how their weight and body type will affect the springs of their jumping stilts and whether they require maintenance.
It’s also advisable for powerbock practitioners to wear protective gear, such as helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads, while engaging in this sport. The best way to practice powerbocking is on flat cement surfaces, as grass and dirt can be slippery and hinder the traction of the jumping stilts.
Powerbocking entails athletes wearing spring-loaded stilts to propel themselves to impressive heights and execute various tricks. Developed by Alexander Böck, a German innovator, in 2004, the initial jumping stilts were legally protected under the trademark “powerskip”.
The stilts used in this sport enable athletes to perform a wide range of jumps, flips, and leaps. Some consider PowerBocking an extreme sport, but for others, it can be a form of exercise, transportation, or even creative expression.
There are many places where it can be done. When using jumping stilts, the most important thing is to find a suitable surface.
Due to the small surface area of the stilts and the materials they are made of, Powerbocking can be challenging on grass or dirt, much like pogo-sticking, as the stilts can easily slip or get caught on uneven terrain.
Therefore, when Powerbocking, it’s best to find a smooth and flat surface, such as asphalt or concrete. For this reason, it is popular in urban areas, like skateparks, as the concrete surface is optimal for the use of jumping stilts. Many urban areas also have natural obstacles that allow Powerbockers to perform tricks.
There are several well-known and popular Powerbocking competitions worldwide. The Riser Winter Cup, held annually in Lille, France, has been one of the main competitions since 2015.
Another French competition, the Nancy Power Day, is also held annually. In the United States, the Capital Bocking USA competition takes place in Washington, D.C.
