THESE ARE THE ART STOLEN BY NAZIS NEVER FOUND

The Nazis are considered the best art thieves in all of history. They looted art galleries, confiscated their citizens, and looted many of Europe’s works of art.

There was a Nazi organization called Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg that was dedicated to looting muses and large collections. Many pieces have been found, but many others have been missing. Forever? In today’s article, we are going to see many of these works that are still being searched!

The stunning Artworks Stolen by Nazis

Raphael, Portrait of a Young Man

Source: Wikipedia

It has always been believed that this portrait was a self-portrait of Raphael. It’s also believed to have been completed in the year 1514. It was placed in the Czartoryski Museum in 1798, thanks to the fact that it was brought to Krakow by Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, the prince.

This work was hidden during the German invasion but was finally discovered by the Gestapo and was hung in the office of the Governor of Poland, Hans Frank.

In 1945 it was still in the hands of the governor and then, after he escaped from the Soviets, nothing more was heard of this great work of art.

Vermeer, The Astronomer

Source: Wikipedia

This work is considered one of Vermeer’s works of art; it has been in the Louvre since 1983.

In earlier times, it was owned by the French Rothschild family and was one of the works seized after the invasion. It was sent to the Jeu de Paume, a warehouse used by the Nazis before the works were shipped to Hitler or Goering.

Finally, it was stored in Altaussee and later restored by the same French family at the end of the war.

Van Gogh, The painter on the way to Tarascon

Courtesy of www.VincentVanGogh.org

This great artwork by Vincent van Gogh was painted in July 1888 and sent to his brother Theo. In this portrait, very different from all the others, he appeared walking and full-length with tools on his back.

It is thought that it was destroyed and disappeared by a fire in the Kaiser-Friedrich Museum in Magdeburg, Germany. The flames were caused by the bombardment of the German city. Unfortunately, it was listed as a “loss in the Stassfurt mines collection” in 1945.

The amber room

Source: Wikipedia

The room that can be seen in this painting was a chamber decorated with amber, mirrors, gold and it was inside the Berlin Palace.

This work was gifted to the tsars and was placed in another Palace, this time in Saint Petersburg. However, in 1941, when the Germans took the city, they took works from the Hall.

The Nazis moved it to the castle of Königsberg. From here, it’s not very clear what happened, since it’s thought that the workart was destroyed in some bombings that took place in 1944.

El Greco, Portrait of a Gentleman

Source: Wikipedia

“The Greco” was recently returned to its owners! This portrait was part of a collection made by Priester in 1944.

It has been searched for 70 years and has finally been returned to the corresponding family in 2015. It appeared in New York City in 1952 and passed through different distributors before reappearing in the big city in 2014.

Max Liebermann, Two Riders on the Beach

Source: Wikipedia

This work is considered one of the best German impressionists. There are two versions of this great work, one of them housed in the Jewish industrialist David Friedmann and the other in a New York collection.

The industrialists were stolen in 1938 and kept by Hildebrand Gurlitt, a dealer.

Leonardo da Vinci, Lady with an Ermine

Source: Wikipedia

This painting represents Cecilia, and it was painted in 1489. She was the lover of Ludovico Sforz, who was the Duke of Milan.

It was stolen in 1939 and passing through Berlin, ended up at Hans Frank in Krakow. The Allies eventually returned it to the Croatian Museum.

Van Gogh, The Langlois Bridge at Arles

Source: Wikipedia

This work of art was painted by Van Gogh four times. The 1888 version was stolen by Goering for Carinhall. This was one of Georing’s favorite paintings, who also stole another portrait of the great Van Gogh artist, Dr. Gachet.
