Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the Bavarian region of southern Germany, very close to the Austrian border. This area is one of the most beautiful and interesting in the country. So at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, the natural panorama is simply spectacular, don’t miss it! 😉
The closest large German city to Neuschwanstein Castle is Munich, which is about 120 kilometers away. And then you can also visit it from Innsbruck in Austria, which is even a little closer than Munich.
Usually, the bus and the train are used to get to the castle, several options are very good. However, in winter, if there is a lot of snow, these transports are canceled. But there are much more fun options: the path can be done on foot or horse-drawn carriages!
You only have to pay if you want to visit the interior of the castle (very recommended). There are plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding area that are completely free, which is the most beautiful thing! Seeing the castle surrounded by mountains and vegetation is impressive.
If you want to visit the interior of the castle, it’s essential to book a guided tour with a fixed entry time. The castle tour lasts about 30 minutes and must be booked in advance.
If you stand at the entrance to Neuschwanstein Castle to buy tickets, you won’t be able to! Tickets can only be purchased at the Ticket office in Hohenschwangau. So before going up, make sure you buy a ticket to avoid disappointment. Remember, the road is uphill!
You can reserve them up to 2 days before the visit and collect them the same day you go up to the castle. Also, you won’t be able to print them at home, you must always go through the Ticket center.
As we have said, when you make the reservation, you must indicate a time slot. Outside these hours, the ticket will no longer be valid. It’s possible to buy a combined ticket to visit Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle, although you can visit only one as well.
The price is cheap, adult tickets cost € 13, but there is a € 2.50 surcharge if you book online. Anyway, we think it’s worth the small commission to skip the line!

Marienbrücke is the best-known viewpoint but not the only one. On the way to the bridge, you can stop on a curve and after entering a somewhat wooded area you will have a pretty decent view of Neuschwanstein Castle. The perspective is not as wide as from the bridge, but it’s very cool!
In addition, once you cross Marienbrücke, follow the path that goes upwards. You will find several amazing viewpoints, and you will see Neuschwanstein Castle and the panorama from above without crowds.
