It’s no secret that Nothing, the Spanish company in which Carl Pei is involved, has caused a tremendous stir in the world of smartphones. Their first (and so far, only) phone has made Nothing, in its early months of existence, a significant player in the technology field. And now, they want to dethrone the iPhone, no less!
It seems that Nothing is plotting to release a new phone in the United States with the intention of directly competing with Apple’s iPhones. In a conversation with CNBC, Nothing’s CEO, Carl Pei, mentioned that they were already in talks with U.S. phone carriers to launch their phone in the country. What a move!
And the Nothing Phone (1) has already landed in more than 40 countries, but curiously, it hadn’t made its grand entrance in the United States. According to Pei, the reason behind this was the logistical complications that arose when trying to make all the providers fit perfectly. “A lot of extra support” was needed to make all the carriers compatible. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if we are finally talking about the long-awaited Nothing Phone (1) making its debut on American soil. Its turn has finally come!
It’s important to understand that Pei built a company from scratch after leaving the company he co-founded with Pete Lau, OnePlus. “The reason we didn’t launch the Phone (1) in the United States is because of the need for substantial additional technical support to be compatible with all carriers and their specific Android customizations.”
Pei mentions that they are currently in talks to eventually introduce a product in that market but acknowledges that it won’t be an easy task, especially considering they are competing with the colossal iPhone, which practically holds undisputed dominance in the United States. “In the world of Android, there is a growing challenge because iOS is gaining ground,” and Pei connects this choice with the “strong lock-in around iMessage and AirDrop.”
The fear of this situation is so real that Pei confesses to feeling uneasy about it. His goal is to achieve profitability by 2024 and avoid devaluation of their sales against the dollar.
And this is not something they are taking lightly. Nothing’s CEO uploaded a review of the iPhone 14 Pro to the company’s YouTube account, where he discussed sales, distribution, and compared it to their own Nothing Phone (1). This clearly indicates the company’s intentions regarding competition!
These rumors come on the same day that Nothing has announced outstanding results: they have already sold more than 500,000 units of the Phone (1) and more than 600,000 units of the Ear (1) and Ear (stick) worldwide. The company has reported that its revenue increased tenfold in 2022, surpassing 237 million euros compared to the previous year’s 19 million.
