Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany, and it has an important role in European history. There are different museums across the city that offer visitors the chance of learning more about all the events that have occurred.
This museum is the most important in Germany and the most visited in Hamburg. Its permanent collection goes from the Middle Ages to Contemporary Art of the present day, passing by such prominent and different names as Rembrandt, Friedrich, Munch, or the avant-garde group “The Bridge” (Die Brücke). It’s the temple for lovers of fine arts!
It opens from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Thursdays until 9:00 p.m. The normal ticket price is € 8. The Pavilion is located next to the central station (Hauptbahnhof), on the Glockengießerwall, so it’s very well-connected to the whole city.
You can walk a little further in the opposite direction from the station to take a walk around Lake Außenalster, you’ll be impressed!
The IMMH takes a journey through the entire history of navigation around the world, it’s amazing! Its expository dialogue is organized into “decks” that touch all the styles of life on the high seas: navigation techniques, discoveries, great characters, ship models, pieces… The interactive concept makes it a very interesting stop.
It is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 and normal admission costs € 12.50. The port area in which it’s located is ideal for taking a walk or having a coffee, observing the maritime activity both before and after the visit! 😉 To access, you can take metro line 4 to the Überseequartier station.
And if you are interested in the history of Hamburg, this museum is the only one that is exclusively dedicated to the history of the city since its foundation around the year 800. Of its permanent collections, the institution itself highlights that of “Hamburg in the 20th century” and that of “Jews in Hamburg”, although it also covers topics such as fashion, music, pictorial or decorative arts. In any case, due to its location and its long history, it’s worth knowing the origins of the city!
The hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00. Tickets are sold for only € 9, and you just have to take the metro line 3 to the St. Pauli stop.
In addition, the neighborhood in which it’s located, which respond to the same name, is one of the most famous red neighborhoods in Europe and a walk through its streets is amazing! So you can take advantage of the trip!
The wax museum is a display of ingenuity and realism united in the magic of sculpture. The one from Hamburg has been portraying characters recognized in all fields for more than 130 years: great ladies and gentlemen of history, geniuses of art and science, or names in current culture and sport. You will be amazed at how real it seems!
The ticket costs € 6 and you’ll find it open from Monday to Sunday from 11:00 to 21:00, and on Saturdays until 00:00.
It’s also located in the St. Pauli neighborhood, very close to the Hamburg History Museum, so if you visit one, you must go through the other!
This museum is a look at the European immigrants who made the port of Hamburg their home, renaming it “the port of dreams”. This space reviews their way of life or the reasons for immigration, putting a face to the people who starred in it. It’s perhaps highly recommended to understand our world today, don’t miss it!
The museum is open in winter, between November and March, from 10:00 to 16:30, and in summer, between April and October, from 10:00 to 18:00. The price of general admission is € 12.50, and Line 3 of the urban train (S-Bahn) has a stop next to the museum; Hamburg-Veddel.
