Most museums kick off with some kind of introduction, like a map or a chat from a guide. But that’s not the case with The House of Cannabis (THC NYC), the fresh weed museum popping up in Soho on Friday, April 7. Instead, this museum starts off, quite fittingly, with a groovy “Disorientation Room.”
While the museum flaunts loads of mind-bending, multi-sensory stuff, it also showcases art, delves into science, and tackles the social justice issues tied to cannabis prosecution.
Being the first of its kind on this grand scale, the museum fills every nook of its four-story, 25,000-square-foot spot at 427 Broadway with cool facts and immersive experiences that can captivate both smokers and non-smokers alike.
Tickets, going for $45 per adult, are up for grabs ahead of the big opening. Here’s a sneak peek at what NYC’s newest museum has in store!
Just saying… No one had ever brought together all those ideas to create a home for cannabis!!!!
Inside THC NYC, a highly skilled creative team led by Creative Director Dan Kough meticulously designed every corner of the space, ensuring no hallway or staircase was left untouched. Here’s a glimpse of what awaits you inside.
As you step into the Disorientation Room, get ready to be mesmerized by the funhouse mirrors and vibrant green lighting.
Here, a video unfolds, showcasing cannabis culture, featuring everyone from skaters to icons like Snoop Dogg and even Martha Stewart. While the film celebrates this vibrant culture, it also sheds light on the War on Drugs, setting the stage for the educational aspect of the entire experience.
Proceeding to The Euphorium, you’ll encounter a massive spinning record where you can sit or lay down, immersing yourself in a musical journey ranging from The Doors to Santana. Enhanced by an impressive light show and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s akin to an adult-friendly merry-go-round.
Dedicated to exploring social justice concerns, The Forum presents real-life stories from New Yorkers, shedding light on how cannabis-related punishment disproportionately impacts people of color.
In collaboration with the Drug Policy Alliance, the museum shares narratives from five individuals personally affected by or facing repercussions from the War on Drugs. This section doesn’t just raise awareness but also encourages visitors to take action.
Fashioned like a pop-up art gallery, The Joint serves as a platform for artists and creators at the intersection of cannabis culture and art.
The current exhibit, titled The Art of Sneakers, features painted sneakers, oversized shoe renderings, and shoe photography.
In this space-age grow site known as The Grow, a multitude of plants will flourish. Claimed to be the first urban grow location in New York City, visitors can witness every stage of cannabis cultivation, from mothers and clones to propagation and the grand finale—the flowering or budding phase.
Exiting the greenhouse, The Microverse treats visitors to a macro photography exhibition. Renowned photographer Chris Romaine of Kandid Kush captures stunning close-up images of cannabis, portraying the plant in practically otherworldly shots.
The artwork, featuring vibrant green, pink, and orange hues, is displayed on shimmering silver walls.
Engaging the sense of smell, The Olfactory offers an aromatic experience centered around terpene aromatics.
Visitors can smell the essences of lust, laughter, energy, sleep, creativity, and calm. The immersive encounter is enhanced by ambient music, videos, and vibrant designs, creating, as described by Kough, “a visual ballet of emotion when people walk into the room.”
In the Seed to Soul section, rapper Curren$y has crafted an original poem for the museum.
This poetic creation is projected along the floor of a spacious area, allowing visitors to step inside and see an image of their body reflecting on the wall with the words filling in their shape.
Now, kick back in a comfy seat and dive into a 10-minute video that delves into the intriguing question: “Can you catch a buzz without lighting up?”
He hooked up his brainwaves to the weed-smoking experience and, in his words, “translated those vibes into this mind-blowing immersive trip. It’s like a taste of being stoned without actually getting stoned. You get to witness all the crazy movements and the beauty that unfolds,” as Kough puts it.
Apart from the main exhibits, there’s more to check out:
There’s a whole bunch of cool stuff to explore beyond the main attractions!!!!! Are you ready?
