Google has changed the script a bit, as Android 12 was followed by Android 12L, a special version for devices with larger screens such as Chromebooks, foldable devices, and tablets. However, the latest version of Android is Android 13!
An operating system isn’t created overnight, and so Google continues to improve Android 13 even after it has already been officially released. Let’s see all the android 13 features!
It seems like only yesterday that Google released Android 12, but work on Android 13 has been underway for some time now. Some small glimpses were leaked some time ago among the AOSP source code and various leaks. But since Google officially released the first Android 13 Developer Preview, we can finally test the new features as they arrive!
Quite interesting will be the ability to choose the language of an app separately, to have for example one app in English, and another in Spanish. This can be useful in cases where an app isn’t well-translated.
Another very important change in the android 13 features, will be the new permission for notifications, destined to cause a small revolution on our mobiles. Until now, apps didn’t need permission to send us notifications, although you could always turn them off afterward.
We’ll have to see how the matter finally turns out and whether there will be exceptions, but it seems that Android 13 apps will have to ask for permission to send notifications before sending them. If you don’t want notifications, you don’t need to do anything.
Another detail that has come up in leaks is TARE or The Android Resource Economy. It appears to be a tool for developers to check the status of processes and scheduled tasks, although it remains to be seen whether it will also have implications for users, such as better system performance in apps, in games, and standardized power saving.
One interesting leak tells of the possible return of Android Beam, with a way to transfer media files from one phone to another with a tap of a finger.
On the other hand, with the new android 13 features, QR codes will be easier to scan with Android 13, as Google is planning to integrate access for the QR code reader directly into the lock screen and as a quick setting.
Android 13 comes after Android 12L, from which it inherits a few tricks in multitasking from the hand of the taskbar that appears if the device has a large screen (tablets, folding devices, and the like). In this taskbar, there is an old acquaintance: the app drawer button. It will also make it possible to control mobile vibration much more precisely.
It looks like with Android 13 Google is finally going to tidy up the clipboard, as Google is preparing a new menu that shows when something has been copied similarly to when taking a screenshot.
New personalization options have arrived for Android’s sleep mode. These include turning off the wallpaper and using the dark theme when the programmed bedtime approaches.
After the design change in Android 12, it’s quite likely that it will stay the same and there won’t be too many changes. It’s also likely that the large-screen features of Android 12L will be integrated into Android 13, although this hasn’t been confirmed yet in the news of android 13 features.
One detail of the Android 13 design that has been leaked relates to the clock on the lock screen. While Android 12 shows a large clock when there are no notifications and a small clock when there are notifications, in Android 13 you will have the option to choose whether you want the small clock to always be used on the lock screen.
Of course, Material You will continue to be an important part of Android 13’s design. According to leaks, Android 13 will give you more control over the color palette that is generated from your current wallpaper.
Customization will continue to be an important part of the system, with new features such as an easier way for apps to suggest you use their quick settings (without you having to do it all by hand) and themed icons, available for all apps. New features such as new animated backgrounds and the ability to customize wallpapers are expected.
You’ll allow developers to add themed icons, something so far only available for Google apps.
Android 13 is official, but the betas continue. Now that Android 13 is stable, Google is using the beta program to test upcoming quarterly updates or QPR (Quarterly Platform Releases). So far, we have learned about these QPR betas:
Android 13 has already been officially launched, but only for the Google Pixel devices. The window is now open, and it’s up to the manufacturers to update sooner or later. It is most likely that high-end phones will start upgrading at the end of the year, and that most handsets less than two years old will start upgrading in 2023.
