We always love to show you new things, like when we gave you the best tips to reduce your carbon footprint at home. Well, today we want to help you to make an urban vegetable garden! Are you ready to become a professional?
When you think of a garden, you also think of space. However, a small space doesn’t mean you can’t have a garden.
You just need to think of something different, or rather something similar. No matter the size of the area available, all you need to know is how to start an urban garden at home 😉
“Growing plants in the city” seems to be the best definition of an urban garden. However, it’s much more than that!
In some cities, single-family homes with at least one plot of land abound. Although care must be taken not to violate Homeowner’s Association rules, it’s possible to plant gardens in the ground.
There are many considerations for this type of garden, including soil type and water availability.
Containers can be anything from a cup to a tree planter. However, planting something in a small pot could mean having to replant it later as it grows.
They can be pretty and practical. Flowers look very nice in them, and vining vegetables also do well in them.
One of the best uses is iron mesh similar to fencing and an organic straw to hold the potting soil and plants. This allows water to flow through the material.
An integral part of any urban garden. They can be larger and are sometimes called raised planters or smaller.
They are usually rectangular. They are ideal for small shrubs, herbs such as sage, and vegetables. Planters are used for smaller herbs and flowers.
Like any project, several steps need to be taken to create an urban organic garden.
Research what can grow in your area. If what you want to grow is difficult, but you still want to grow it, do some research on how to grow it.
Now that you have done your research, at each time of the year, decide what you want to grow!
The last big planning session; draw out what you intend to plant and where in the garden (or in which containers) it will grow.
To do this, consider the height of the plants; tall plants, such as corn or hollyhocks, should be closer to the back to allow the front plants to have access to sunlight and water.
If you have an automatic watering system, make sure that plants do not obstruct it so that everything can be watered. It’s much easier to erase a line on a piece of paper than to plant a new garden.
Soil preparation is a process of adding things to the soil itself to encourage plant growth, instructions can be found on every packet of seeds you buy.
Some plants can go straight into the soil. For these, simply mix the ingredients when plowing. Others need to be started in plant boxes to grow properly.
In colder areas, this must be done indoors. This usually starts in February, so that the plants are ready to go into the ground once all danger of frost has passed.
The best time to start planting is in early spring so that your sprouts have a few weeks to grow strongly and you can plant everything when the fear of frost has passed.
When you pick up the seed packets, you will see that they indicate how long it takes for the seeds to germinate, as well as how long it takes from sprouting to turning into vegetables and aromatic plants.
As we said, you don’t have to have a big yard to grow vegetables. Find large containers, or even old wooden crates or burlap bags, with good drainage and sunshine, and you’re all set.
Except for a few delicate herbs and lettuce, most vegetables need good sun. Pay attention to what the plant needs when planning the space.
A garden shop will have ideas about the best hardy and compact varieties of the food you want to grow. You can sow the seeds indoors following the instructions on the packet and using a seed tray, or buy the starter seeds from the garden shop and replant them with good soil. Look for plants without discolored leaves and with strong, springy stems, and make sure you get a good potting soil mix.
Water, good soil, and sunlight are all you need to succeed. Just get started. Not all plants will impress you the first time, but pay attention to how they progress!
