Artists Behind the Cancun Underwater Museum of Art

This underwater museum was designed to raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation and the need to care for coral reefs. The incredible sculptures were created by a team of Mexican and British artists and are designed to provide a safe environment in which marine life can flourish.

Jason deCaires Taylor

Born on August 12, 1974, in Dover, the British sculptor was the mastermind behind the world’s first underwater sculpture park, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park. He is known primarily for installing underwater sculptures in specific locations that become artificial coral reefs, upon which local communities and marine life depend.

Karen Salinas Martínez

Young artist Karen Salinas Martínez, part of the MUSA sculptors’ group, frequently uses nature and play as recurring thematic pretexts. Both often appear shyly, or sometimes excessively, in most of this plastic artist’s works, always creating pieces loaded with a multidisciplinary sense. Which in turn seek to maintain and enhance freedom as the ultimate idea of their artistic expression.

Roberto Díaz Abraham

Born on May 11, 1951, Roberto Díaz Abraham began his career in the economic and administrative area. After graduating with a degree in economics, he traveled to Boston on a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree, where he took a ceramics course.

In 1993, he arrived in Cancun, and besides serving as CEO of Aquaworld, he began a hard learning work until his first exhibition at the end of 2004. After 5 years, he is one of the proud founders of the Underwater Museum of Art.

Salvador Quiroz Ennis

Creator of CONCEPT M, is dedicated to museological design, museography, and construction for exhibitions. Salvador Quiroz Ennis trained as an industrial designer, although he has developed in architecture, ecology, and kinetic installations.

Within the Musa scope, he carried out the project under the name of BACAB. It is a reef-made sculpture, carried out by Salvador Quiroz Ennis with the collaboration of Jason de Caires Taylor, Javier Dajer, Lua del Río, Todd Barber, and Aquaworld Cancun. This work is intended to follow up on the cooperation efforts carried out by Salvador Quiroz, in his active participation within NGOs, as well as being one of the MUSA sculptors because his works are unforgettable.

Rodrigo Quiñones Reyes

Recognized as one of the MUSA sculptors, this young artist has had the privilege of exhibiting his various works at the Califia Gallery in Prague, and at the Image Factory Cultural Center in Belize. Also, in the Joseph and Marie Collection of Sciences and Arts of Mexico City.

Rodrigo Quiñonez Reyes worked on the Volkswagen project for MUSA. He made a “Vocho” that was installed on the Caribbean Sea bed as part of the Think Blue campaign, carried out by the German automaker. He is currently the curator of the Da Burn Gallery.
