Who was Harvey Milk? 

Harvey Milk was a pivotal figure in LGBTQ rights and American politics. Born in 1930 in New York, he faced the challenges of coming to terms with his sexuality in a society marked by hostility and discrimination against LGBTQ individuals. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Milk settled in San Francisco in the early 1970s and opened a camera store on Castro Street.

In 1973, Milk embarked on his political journey by running for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, though he was unsuccessful initially. Nevertheless, he persevered, becoming a prominent advocate for the gay community, particularly in San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood. After three attempts, he achieved a historic victory in the 1977 election, securing a seat on the Board of Supervisors.

During his time in office, Milk tirelessly championed LGBTQ rights and fought against discrimination, successfully sponsoring a groundbreaking gay rights ordinance that protected individuals from discrimination based on their sexual orientation. His advocacy work and political achievements made him a beacon of hope and inspiration for the LGBTQ community.

Tragically, Milk’s life was cut short on November 27, 1978, when Dan White, a former colleague, murdered him and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone in the City Hall. Nonetheless, Milk’s legacy endured, continuing to inspire the LGBTQ rights movement in the years that followed. Today, he is remembered as a pioneering activist. He played a crucial role in advancing acceptance and equality for LGBTQ individuals.
