BACKPACKING EUROPE ROUTES: GET READY TO TRAVEL CHEAP!

Backpacking Europe routes: Cheap European cities to explore.

Europe is not only the most civilized continent, It’s also a compendium of countries that, as close as they may seem, have their own charm based on their cultural singularities and their monumental spectacularity. Therefore, there is nothing like following these itineraries so as not to miss anything… or to get lost forever! Today we want to talk about the best routes to travel around Europe in the cheapest possible way, ready? 😉

The best routes to fall in love with Europe

Aran Islands – Ireland

The Cliffs of Moher are the most visited natural site in Ireland, but the Aran Islands offer a spectacular and much quieter experience. You can go to them by ferry or by plane from Galway, it’s an iconic trip! The force of the sea against the rocks leaves a spectacular landscape.

Flaherty shot the famous documentary Man of Aran, which showed the abnegation of the islanders to go to sea or create a little fertile soil by accumulating algae on the rock.

Through a labyrinth of stone walls, you reach the walled fort of Dún Aonghasa or the ruins of the Seven Churches, a pilgrimage site since the 7th century!

The Monasteries of Bucovina

In the northeast of Romania, there are a dozen Orthodox monasteries with frescoes in the open-air protected by huge eaves. These unique temples in the world were built in the fifteenth century.

The elites had priority to attend the services and outside were the common people and the troops in charge of defending the position of the Turkish forces. The murals show the solemn classical expressiveness of Byzantine art and were intended to instruct the faithful about what could await them beyond this world (hell or salvation).

The churches are located in isolated places, protected by the deep Romanian forests, a forest mass unparalleled in Europe. This makes your journey even more sensitive and interesting, traveling through an agricultural world that has barely reached mechanization!

The Ardennes and Limburg

Europe is beautiful because she is unsuspected. These two regions located to the south of Belgium and the Netherlands base their beauty on their ingenuity, their landscapes and their history.

The essentials? The Trappist abbeys of Wallonia, the riverside charm of Dinant and Maastricht, the cultural awakening of Genk and Hasselt and the spectacular bike paths such as Cycling throught water that know no borders… or aesthetic limits! 😉

Lakes through the alps

The reigning mountain chain in the center of Europe has left great pools of water where civilization and culture have made their way!

From east to west, this itinerary leads from the idyllic Hallstatt to Leman, passing through the immense Lake Constance where towns such as Lindau or Constance itself are located.

In Switzerland it’s worth it sailing through the Four Cantons embarking in Lucerne and in Thun, from where its castle rules the waters. And already on the southern slope, Lago di Garda, Como, Lugano and Maggiore make up an unbeatable quartet of glamor and beauty!  Give pleasure to your eyes and breathe fresh air!

Grand Saumur – France

The Grand Saumur region, on the last stretch of the Loire River, doesn’t boast the splendid palaces that surround Tours and Orléans, but it does offer unexpected and monumental attractions.

To begin with, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, a historical and artistic landmark in the country, the city of Saumur itself, the Rochememenier troglodyte village, and the Perrières quarries (Doué la Fontaine), a spectacular underground complex that imitates the seabed.

There are several ways to explore the area: by car, by a barge on the Loire River and its tributary, the Vienne, or by bicycle along the adapted La Loire à Vélo route!

😍If you are into exploring street art while traveling, check out why Berlin is the graffiti capital of Europe!

Iceland and the Golden Ring

The great island of ice, fire, and water is an amazing destination to enjoy nature in its most primitive state. Geysers, waterfalls, glaciers, cliffs, lava fields, thermal water lagoons… The road that runs along the perimeter of Iceland approaches the most surprising enclaves and passes through cities such as Husavik from where whale watching trips are made!

Kinderdijk Mills by bike – Netherlands

Starting from Dordrecht, the oldest city in the Netherlands is the best way to get to know the town of Kinderdijk and discover some of what are considered to be the most beautiful windmills in the Netherlands.

A pleasant bike route to enjoy one of the most famous symbols of the Netherlands. The 19 mills here have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and were built around 1740 to pump excess water from the Alblasserwaard polder.

Also, since Kindedijk is only 15 km separate Kindedijk from Rotterdam, it seems like a good idea to take advantage of the bicycle to visit this port city with interesting museums and amazing architecture.

Slovenian Istria

This beautiful and medieval town of Piran is located on the small peninsula of Slovenian Istria. Photogenic to a fault, it’s a pleasure to walk along its walls and walk its picturesque streets and perhaps enter one of the ten churches that are preserved in it.

Its buildings show architectural inspiration from nearby Venice, just 2 hours away. One of the most interesting visits to Piran is the Secovlje salt pans, located within a protected area and in a natural park.

In these salt flats, which were founded in 804, you can visit the salt museum and, through a guided tour, observe how they collect salt completely manually, just as it has been done for hundreds of years.

Along the Douro to Porto

Cities with rivers have something that gives them a special charm and Porto is one of the most beautiful, its medieval historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This beautiful Portuguese city is an excellent starting point to get to know the Douro Valley and one of the best options to enjoy the journey is by car. Explore its rugged landscape, with vineyard terraces and countless farms, traditional houses, and places as interesting as the Pinhão train station decorated with fabulous 19th-century tile murals.

Just 20 kilometers from here is the Foz Côa Archaeological Park, a wonderful open-air display of paleolithic art, considered one of the largest in Europe!

Route 66 of Portugal

On the Portuguese road map, national road 2 is a line that seems to be drawn with a pen and runs through the center of the country. In total, more than seven hundred kilometers off highways to get to know the interior of Portugal with all the calm that is needed.

This extensive route begins in Chaves, in the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro region. Vila Real comes out to meet; it’s followed by the steep mountain ranges of the Parque Natural do Alvão, also Coimbra as the ancient medieval capital, nestled on the banks of the Mondego river.

Little by little, the south is reached; you arrive in Alentejo land and the cork oaks welcome you in the landscape. Faro and its ideal beaches are the goals. In between, a feast of adventures and gastronomy!

Universe of Lorca in Granada

This is a route that starts from the avant-garde Federico García Lorca Center to cover kilometers and read verses while enjoying the landscapes of Granada.

In Fuente Vaqueros, in the surroundings of his birthplace (and today a museum), there are four fundamental enclaves to feel the poet’s breath of inspiration. From there, very close, is the other family home, that of Valderrubio, where the family moved in 1906.

Right there, you can also visit the house of Francisca Alba Sierra, Frasquita Alba, and where Lorca was inspired by his famous tragedy La casa de Bernarda Alba.

Finally, a tragic and emotional place: the Barranco de Víznar, declared a place of Memory. Hundreds of victims of Franco’s repression were shot and buried in mass graves there, including the poet.

Norway from church to church!

A landscape that is sometimes sublime and the feeling of loneliness that it provokes makes rolling on the roads of Norway an exciting adventure. On this route, history and nature are combined in equal parts to get to know some of the most beautiful wooden churches in the country.

It’s believed that there were more than 2,000 such churches in the whole of medieval northwestern Europe, but today they remain almost exclusively in Norway. There are a total of twenty-eight churches, called Stav Kirke. Altogether they would serve to string together a long road trip through the country, but if you are looking for something shorter, you can opt for an easy route that goes from the stave church of Høre to the west; Just over 200 kilometers to do slowly and get to know the churches of Øye, Borgund, and Undredal, until reaching the wooden Church of Hopperstad, in Vik, on the south shore of the beautiful Sognefjord.

The Mediterranean coast of Montenegro

Montenegro opens onto the Mediterranean to the west with a coastline that has nothing to envy its neighbor Croatia. The traveler who ends up there, by choice or by mistake, ends up discovering rugged areas and beaches worthy of a postcard and getting to know cities that are living vestiges of the past such as Budva and Kotor, leaning out over the sea and at the time important control centers of the mare nostrum.

Are you already preparing your backpack? We are eager to travel!
