The currency is Afrobeats (with an ‘s’), similar to Afrobeat popularized by Fela Kuti in the 1970s, but it stands out with its modern origins and flavor. Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid or Big Wiz, is undoubtedly one of the world’s most popular musicians. He gained international recognition in 2016 after collaborating with Drake on “One Dance”, which topped charts in 15 countries, including the US Billboard Hot 100.
Over a decade later, Wizkid has collaborated with many other stars, including Beyoncé on “Brown Skin Girl” which won a Grammy for Best Music Video at the 63rd Grammy Awards. “Essence” is part of the “Made In Lagos” album released in 2020.
