1. Make your voice heard

We are the initial generation to acknowledge that we are causing harm to the planet, and we might be the last generation with the ability to take action. Expressing your opinions is an influential action, especially when directed towards the right individuals.

Despite assurances of a better world, our leaders are not on a path to deliver on those promises. Immediate and decisive action is imperative. Your support will be utilized to hold the Government accountable for its commitments. Your voice holds significant power, and collectively, we can underscore the urgent need for action on climate and nature.

It goes beyond just communicating with those in positions of authority. Engage with your friends, neighbors, and colleagues, encouraging them to embrace positive changes. Speak up, reach out to everyone, and ensure your voice is heard.

2. Stay informed

Keeping yourself well-informed is one of the most effective actions you can take. The more knowledge you possess, the better equipped you are to engage in conversations with friends, family, and those you wish to influence. Familiarize yourself with the facts, stay updated on recent news concerning the state of our natural world, and determine actionable steps.

With the world at our fingertips, take advantage of learning from influential figures, staying abreast of news, and following research organizations dedicated to improving our planet.

3. Engage politically

Every individual in the UK aged 18 or above has the right to vote for their Member of Parliament (MP). This presents an opportunity to vote for someone who aligns with your views and prioritizes environmental issues.

Political engagement extends beyond voting and is not constrained by age. Increasingly, young people are joining forces to convey their desire for change to political leaders.

It’s crucial to hold our politicians accountable! You can achieve this by reaching out to your local MP or participating in constituency meetings where you can voice your opinions. Identify your MP and explore ways to communicate with them!

4. Conserve water 

Small actions can make a big difference. Turn off the tap while you brush your teeth! Do you have a dripping faucet? You may be wasting 340 liters of water—fix it!

5. Be mindful of your car

If possible, stay away from the road two days a week or more. You’ll reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 721 kilograms per year. It’s easier than you think.

You can combine your errands: go to the supermarket, school, and the dog’s daycare in one trip. And talk to your boss about telecommuting; it’s an advantage for both of you.

You can improve gasoline consumption between 0.6% and 3% by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure, and make sure to make necessary repairs if your car fails emissions.

6. Walk, bike, or use public transport

Utilizing walking and cycling are clear methods to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Plus, you’ll improve your quality of life, get good cardiovascular exercise, and burn some calories while doing it.

If you live in an area where walking is not possible, take advantage of local public transportation if you can. Or carpool. Even one less car on the road makes a difference.

7. Reduce, reuse, and recycle

You can help reduce pollution simply by throwing that Coke can in the recycling bin.

When ordering online, check if you can group your packages for shipping. Buy products made from recycled materials. And don’t forget to recycle your own paper. All of this, believe it or not, makes a difference.

8. Give composting a try

Imagine if you could use your garbage to create your own compost. It could assist in decreasing the quantity of solid waste generated. Plus, compost is a great natural fertilizer!

9. Switch to LED

Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) are great. They can last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs and consume at least two-thirds less energy, but even CFLs have issues. They are hard to dispose of because they contain mercury.

Enter light-emitting diodes, or LED bulbs. They emit light in a very narrow wavelength band, making them super energy-efficient. Start replacing your old incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs (if you haven’t already). They cost more than CFLs and incandescent bulbs, but equivalent LED bulbs can last at least 30,000 hours, compared to the 1,000 hours of incandescents or the 8,000 to 10,000 hours of CFLs.

10. Eat sustainable foods

Today, large-scale food production accounts for up to 25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. So, how do you eat sustainably? By choosing food from farmers who aim to conserve natural resources, promote sustainable development, and have the least possible impact on the land.

11. Be mindful of your purchases

It’s within our capacity to exercise greater awareness about our purchasing choices and their origins. Opting to buy less not only conserves your finances but also diminishes waste and positively impacts your environmental contribution. Embracing a lifestyle that is less centered on consumerism can be advantageous for both personal well-being and the planet.
