Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers are required to use a USB-C cable as part of a common charging standard for mobile devices throughout the European Union starting in the fall of 2024, according to new legislation announced by Apple officials on Tuesday. Margrethe Vestager, Vice President of the European Commission, stated that the legislation aims to reduce electronic waste and eliminate the “cable clutter.” According to the statement, “mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, digital cameras, headphones, portable gaming consoles, and portable speakers that are charged via cable must be equipped with a USB Type-C port, regardless of their manufacturer.”

The word is that the tech giant reluctantly accepted implementing this measure in its new iphone 15 models. In other words, it has no choice but to comply, though it may not entirely agree. Greg Joswiak apple, Apple’s Marketing Manager, confirmed the news from the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, stating that they are in the process of transitioning to comply with European regulations and added, “Obviously, we’ll have to comply. We have no other choice,” he commented. He also took the opportunity to criticize the European Union, stating that ten years ago, the organization promoted the use of micro-USB, and at that time, the company offered USB cables for consumers to switch without issues. As a result, more than a billion people continued using their original chargers, avoiding the generation of electronic waste.
