WHAT IS FLYBOARDING? FLY OVER THE WATER!
Does the Crazy Idea of Flying over the Waters appeal to you? If you like extreme water sports such as kitesurfing, you have to try flyboard! In this post, you will see what is flyboarding! Keep on reading!
History and evolution of Flyboard as a recreational activity
Flyboarding is one of the most avant-garde water sports. Its appearance is relatively contemporary since its invention is attributed to Franky Zapata less than a decade ago.
In the autumn of 2012, Franky had the brilliant idea of using water propulsion, as in jet skis, to propel a board outwards from the water’s surface. After several attempts, he improved the design and achieved his goal, which was to propel the board out of the water and keep it stable in the air. On top of the board are a pair of boots, into which the feet of anyone who wants to try the invention are inserted.
The fully functional Flyboard equipment was presented for the first time at the Jet Ski World Championship in China. Although a competing company sued Zapata, claiming that they had tested a similar mechanism before, the French Institute of Industrial Property granted Franky Zapata the patent.
Today, aerial Flyboards have also been successfully designed. The most recent air-powered version achieved, in April 2016, a Guinness World Record for the longest flight of a hoverboard, exceeding 1.24274 miles, two kilometers.
The air-powered Flyboard allows flights up to ten thousand feet at a speed of one hundred and fifty kilometers per hour. It has ten minutes of autonomy and is not fitted with a hose, but is propelled by gasses through jet propulsion.
How does the Flyboard work?
The Flyboard is connected by a long hose to the jet ski. The water is forced under pressure from the jet ski. The jet ski picks up the water at the bow and uses a turbine to force it out of the stern at high pressure. A hose of about twenty meters, similar to the one used by firemen, is in charge of transporting this pressure to the board.
On the board, there are nozzles attached to the boots that support the pilot on the board. The boots are attached to the board, which is similar to those used in wakeboarding. Underneath the boots, pressurized jets of water are ejected, impacting the water and pushing the board upwards!
The equipment can be used in two modes: the first requires two people, one to control the throttle that regulates the power and height of the rider. The second mode involves an accessory called an “electronic management kit”, which puts the rider in control of the throttle. If the rider manages to control the vectorial orientation of the water jets, they can reach heights of more than fifteen meters.
The mobility of the Flyboard allows the rider multiple degrees of freedom, even making it possible to sink in water up to 0.0155343 miles, two and a half meters, deep.
Requirements for Flyboarding
To flyboard you must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with parental permission, and you must wear a life jacket. Otherwise, the practice of this amazing sport doesn’t require physical strength or training to start flying. Those who can control their balance more quickly will be able to perform daring tricks and pirouettes.
However, it isn’t necessary to possess extraordinary skills. According to the companies that have started to offer the rental of these devices, everyone can fly from the first attempt, as it has a fast learning curve. The important thing to achieve the best performance is to be confident and comfortable playing in the water.
People who have suffered dislocated shoulders or knees and are at risk of a relapse of this condition shouldn’t do this sport. Neither should those who are medically unable to dive into the water.
Flyboarding isn’t recommended for pregnant women or people with serious back or neck problems.
It’s forbidden to do flyboard if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs!
