Reasons to base your diet on real food options

For some time now you may have been hearing terminology such as “realfooders” or eating “real food”, as these concepts are reaching all kinds of audiences and changing the lives of thousands of people, but… do you really know what real food or realfooding is? 

What is Real Food or the Realfooding movement?

Although a priori these types of terms may sound new and have started to be heard a few years ago, if we were to make a comparison with avant-garde cuisine, “realfood” would be traditional food, the one of your beloved grandmother.

Therefore, this concept is nothing new, as it was born several years ago by the dietitian-nutritionist Carlos Ríos, whose objective with this movement was nothing more or less than to improve people’s health and quality of life.

This purpose would be achieved through a diet based on minimally processed foods, quality ingredients, and last but not least, by reducing all those ultra-processed products that we find so easily in our daily lives.

The basis for real food

Surely you have an idea of the kind of food that this lifestyle advocates. However, let’s go a little deeper into the basics.

1. Real food

This refers to all food that we get directly from nature, without any processing of the food.

2. Good processed foods

In this category, we would include those foods that have undergone some kind of industrial manipulation or, failing that, by humans, without their quality or condition of healthy food has changed, as this type of processing has lengthened their shelf life or has facilitated their consumption.

Some products such as yogurt, gazpacho, canned food, frozen vegetables, and peanut butter can be considered as well processed.

3. Ultra-processed foods

Obviously, they’re the opposite of real food: The bag of chips you like to eat with your buddies, the ultra-processed burgers you love to eat, and that smoothie that doesn’t have a single real fruit in it… 🙄

Benefits of practicing real food or based on real food

We could say that the benefits of this type of food are innumerable, so here are some of the most relevant ones:

  • Reducing the development of diseases that have a super important relationship with food, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
  • There are foods that have a higher cost. Even so, in general terms, this lifestyle can be much more economical than one based on ultra-processed foods.
  • Increased micronutrient intake in our daily lives.
  • Generally, there will be a higher consumption of fresh produce.
  • Mechanisms such as the immune system or hormonal control will be improved.
