CHROME MUSIC LAB: AN ONLINE SONG MAKER
All Google Music Maker experiments were built with freely accessible web technology such as Web Audio API, WebMIDI, Tone.js, and more. These tools make it easier for coders to build new interactive music experiences. You can get the open-source code for lots of these experiments on Github.
You can play with these experiments across devices – phones, tablets, laptops – just by opening the site on a web browser such as Chrome.

The tools that you can find in Google Music Lab are the following:
- Song Maker Free: Chrome Music Lab Song Maker is used to make your songs, using the fundamentals and aesthetics of a sequencer. It has two different areas where the instruments can be changed independently: the melodic part and the rhythmic part. When the composition is finished, it is possible to save it and share it.
- Chrome Music Lab Rhythm: Here you can compose rhythmic loops using different instruments. The composition mechanics are visual, simple, and intuitive, using a line for each instrument.
- Spectrogram: Thanks to the Music Lab Experiments Spectrogram, you can visualize the spectrograms of different instruments/sounds or anything you can think of using the microphone. It allows the understanding of the timbre and the appearance of the harmonic sounds.
- Melody maker: It is the same as Song Maker but without the rhythmic part. It also allows you to create a copy of the melody created two pulses later, producing a canon effect.
- Chords: This one is about chord experimentation, when you press a key on the piano, a perfect major or minor chord is created, in a fundamental state.
- Sound Waves: This is a representation of how sound waves are transmitted through the air. When you play the piano, a set of points moves, depending on the frequency provided by the note on the keyboard.
- Kandinsky: Relate the painting to the music. This tool is inspired by the painter Kandinsky. When you paint different elements (lines, triangles, or circles), sounds are generated and automatically create a song when you press play.
- Piano roll: This is a sequencer-like display of the different notes that make up a job. You can select different pieces and change the instrument with which they are played.
- Strings: Through this tool, you can appreciate the mathematical relationship between the length of a string and its frequency. That is to say, the influence of length on the height of sound.
- Oscillators: Four characters, each representing a different oscillator. An oscillator is a system that generates changes in the waveform of the sound. Through them, we can understand the relationship between frequency and pitch; and between waveform and timbre.
- Arpeggios: Creation of arpeggios with different melodic patterns. Using a wheel, you choose the chord to be used. You can also change the instrument (harp or piano) and the tempo.
- Voice Spinner: Through a recording, you can visualize and experiment with the generated waveform. Increasing, reducing speed, and inverting its reproduction are the main functions that this tool allows.
- Harmonics: A set of notes represented by lines explains the harmonic phenomenon, visualizing the different nodes of the sound wave.
- Shared Piano: play the piano online with a friend across the world
Apart from all the tools we already explained, we can find another very interesting one in the Chrome Music Lab. This one is the Shared Piano, a tool where you have an online room in which you can invite friends through a link and create or play music together.
